As part of the Labour Movement’s Appreciating U movement, Young NTUC is calling on more youths to be proactive in showing respect and appreciation to workers in their workplaces.
The Appreciating U movement aims to have more people involved in recognising the invaluable contributions of our working people to society and cultivate a spirit of kindness towards our unsung heroes. Riding the recent waves of ground-up activities, the Labour Movement’s youth wing will be working together with its youth chapters to touch the hearts of low-wage workers in Singapore, particularly those in the cleaning, security and landscape sectors.
This initiative follows earlier conversations and dialogues with youth members, where one of the salient points raised was the importance of respect for all workers. Acting on this, Young NTUC hopes getting more young working adults involved in the Appreciating U movement will cultivate greater empathy for working people, regardless of collar, age or nationality.
Starting with a joint initiative with Young AUSBE (Amalgamated Union of Statutory Board Employees) and National Library Board (NLB), 20 volunteers distributed snack packs containing cereal drinks, milo, cookies and crackers, as well as NTUC FairPrice vouchers to more than 50 cleaners at NLB today, thanking them for their hard work at the same time. To further increase awareness, volunteers also distributed bookmarks with the message “Respect All Workers” to members of the public. More of such initiatives are in the pipeline.
Young NTUC Committee Secretariat, Mr Eric Lim, said, “As young workers, many of us become so absorbed in climbing the corporate ladder that we forget the people around us who work tirelessly around the clock to make our work and living environments clean, green and safe. As the largest youth movement in Singapore, we hope to be the change-makers and inspire more of our youth to respect all workers and take the time to show appreciation to them, regardless of the job they do, through simple words or action.”
