Young working adults and fresh graduates looking to join growing sectors such as fintech or greentech can look forward to over 300 vacancies at Young NTUC’s third annual LIT DISCOvery career symposium and marketplace.

The four-day symposium began on 27 July 2021 and will end on 30 July 2021.

The event is supported by the National Youth Council, in partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore.

The LIT DISCOvery event will be held virtually via the Hubilo platform and is expected to engage over 2,000 youths, and will touch on topics across both financial and sustainability technology.

Participants will gain insights through job opportunities, masterclasses, panel discussions, career profiling and Clubhouse conversations.

On the first day of the symposium, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng – who was one of the keynote speakers – said that the pandemic forced traditional businesses to evolve and speed up their adoption of digital transformation.

He said “As we embrace technology and progress forward, we need to ensure that our workforce is adequately trained to keep up with the changing demands of the job market … Being future-ready does not only apply to the workers of today. Ensuring our young workers of tomorrow stay competitive in the global economy is also the Labour Movement’s commitment to our youths.”

NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Desmond Choo, who was also at the event as a keynote speaker, said: “The LIT DISCOvery Symposium is all about helping our young workers look far and look ahead in their careers. It might seem scary to be starting in the workforce in such times, but I encourage our young workers to grab opportunities that come their way and keep their options open. There will always be transferable skills that they can bring along with them to a new role.”

While Mr Choo understood that pivoting into new sectors may not be ideal for some, he believed it was important for youths to step out of their comfort zones and continue improving themselves through training and skills upgrading to remain relevant.

Navigating the Growth Sectors

This year’s symposium will mark the beginning of new collaboration for the tripartite partners with the fintech and greentech sectors, said Young NTUC.

The event aims to connect youths to job vacancies, training, and career resources, and equip them with the necessary tech and soft skills to pivot into new and evolved job roles.

The symposium and marketplace will also offer youths a variety of learning resources and career guidance through masterclasses, career profiling, coaching and networking opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Singapore FinTech Youth Chapter (SFYC) will see its first executive committee inaugurated at the symposium by NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Patrick Tay.

The chapter was established between the Polytechnics and Singapore FinTech Association and powered by PolyFinTech 100.

The inauguration of the chapter signifies the start of a series of collaborations with NTUC to help youths build and grow their careers in the fintech sector.

Young NTUC will also be supporting the Banking and Financial Services Union (BFSU) in its launch of the BFSU Support & Skills Up (S2U) Programme.

The programme aims to form a strong network within the financial sector where workers can receive support and guidance from their peers, the union, and its partners, to navigate and plan their careers better.

The programme is also supported by the Blockchain Association Singapore (BAS), NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), Institute of Banking and Finance (IBF), NUS School of Computing and Singapore FinTech Association (SFA).

In the greentech sector, Young NTUC and the Singapore Institute of Building Limited (SIBL) will establish a sustainability and built environment mentorship network.

The network will see more than 100 experienced individuals volunteering as mentors to guide youths interested in joining this sector.
