NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) made a foray into the heartlands during the preview of Our Tampines Hub (OTH) over the weekend on 7 August 2016. Attended by more than 400 participants, the fair comprised 22 employers, many of them OTH tenants, offering 900 vacancies for positions in retail, food and beverage, recreation and healthcare.
“We are building, from the beginning, a hub that is by residents for residents. That is why today, we have partnered with e2i to host a job fair with 900 vacancies for residents to participate in.
“e2i will also be able to assist you and help you to get a job, if not here, then somewhere else in Singapore,” elaborated Minister for Environment and Water Resources and Advisor to Tampines Grassroots Organisations Masagos Zulkifli, who was guest-of-honour.
Commenting on the community-first approach in creating work opportunities for residents, NTUC Director, Progressive Wage Model, and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC Desmond Choo said: “We are trying to set an example of how a community can come together and pull together job opportunities where people don’t have to travel too far. I envisage more of such jobs fairs with integrated job curation so workers can find better jobs and manage raising a family a lot better.”
A HUB FOR ALL
More than 5,000 residents got a sneak preview of what to expect at OTH, an integrated community and lifestyle space, on the same day as the job fair.
Built on the site of the former Tampines Stadium and Tampines Sports Hall, the hub will house the new Tampines stadium, sports halls and courts, a hawker centre, library, bowling alley and even a swimming complex, among a host of other community facilities.
These will be opened in phases from November this year, with full completion expected around June 2017. The hub aims to meet the lifestyle needs of the 200,000 residents in Tampines.
