Spirits were high on 10 April 2015 as the newly created Creative Media and Publishing Union (CMPU) held its inaugural Members’ Nite at the Scarlet City, AMK Hub, graced by CMPU Advisor Desmond Lee.
Mr Lee, CMPU President David Teo and General Secretary Mindy Kwok also launched CMPU’s new logo in the presence of some 100 members.
Officially registered on 1 January 2015, CMPU is an amalgamation of Singapore Press Holdings Employees’ Union (SPHEU) and Singapore National Union of Journalists (SNUJ).
Growing Stronger
Mr Teo said during an opening speech that “this new union hopes to grow stronger to represent the employees of the Creative Media and Publishing industry.”
He added: “The global publishing industry has been going through periods of turmoil over the past few years… The two unions [SPHEU and SNUJ] need to evolve so that we can grow within the sector.”
According to CPMU Advisor Desmond Lee, by bringing together employees from other sectors related to this industry, the union gives the opportunity for a wider and holistic representation of workers in these sectors.
