As part of efforts to develop young leaders, Young NTUC held its latest Human Library session on 10 July 2019 at the NTUC Centre.
The latest session brought together 27 young union leaders and nEbO members with NTUC Central Committee (CC) members – United Workers of Petroleum Industry General Secretary K Karthikeyan and United Workers of Electronics and Electrical Industries General Secretary Tan Richard.
The informal setting was a platform for youth leaders to hear first-hand from veteran unionists about their experiences, challenges, and what drive them as union leaders.
Some of the topics that were shared included industrial relations, negotiating with management, and the responsibilities union leaders have to their members.
“These kinds of platforms allow us to learn a lot from one another. I would say keep it up. Perhaps you can bring back what you’ve learnt and help your unions. I wish you all the best. Keep building on your passion and commitment,” said Mr Tan to the youth leaders.
One of the youth leaders was Attraction, Resorts and Entertainment Union executive council member Zaid Idris.
“I’m glad both brother Karthikeyan and brother Richard gave young union leaders in their unions the opportunity to serve in the executive committees. I’m hoping more like-minded senior unionists like them can also follow in their footsteps and let us [young union leaders] flourish,” he said.
Last year, the Human Library sessions organised by Young NTUC hosted CC members such as Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union General Secretary Tan Hock Soon, Port Officers’ Union President Benjamin Tang, and SIA Engineering Company Engineers and Executive Union General Secretary Ong Hwee Liang.
