Children of single mums were in for a treat when they attended a motivational and leadership camp held recently.
The two-day, one-night camp was part of NTUC Women’s Development Secretariat (WDS) WeCare for U Project, and was sponsored by Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU).
Held at the beginning of December 2012 at Camp Challenge Sembawang, the event saw 16 teenagers, aged between 12 and 16, challenging themselves through various obstacle courses and scaling the high elements course.
“We wanted this camp to enable the children to realise their potential and their leadership skills.
“It’s all about building their confidence and how they should feel good about themselves,” said NTUC Director of WDS, Sylvia Choo
She added that for single mums, they had a very challenging environment as they had to play a dual role of a nurturing angel and a disciplinarian.
Hence, the WeCare for U is for bonding, to ensure that while the mother is busy at work, the child will not be left alone.
SMOU representative Daylen Tan took the opportunity to attend the camp, giving him the opportunity to mingle with the teenagers.
Daylen who is also a Young SMOU member said: “The fund was given to NTUC WDS – WeCare for U project during our SMOU 60th Anniversary, and this is very much in line with our SMOU culture of Caring and Sharing with our members.”
