In view of Singapore entering Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), this year’s National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) May Day Migrant Workers Celebration was held as a virtual show. Some 50,000 migrant workers tuned-in live on the Migrant Workers' Centre Facebook page on 23 May 2021, from 7pm to 9pm. The virtual show comprises both live and pre-recorded song and dance items by celebrities from India and Bangladesh as well as pre-recorded performances by artists from China, Myanmar and fellow migrant workers in Singapore. NTUC President Mary Liew and Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng joined in the celebrations online in solidarity with our migrant workers.

Due to the heightened COVID-19 measures, NTUC and MWC will be presenting our migrant workers with care packs when conditions allow for its safe distribution. Around 20,000 MWC care packs will be given out at a later date, consisting of NTUC60 “#EveryWorkerMatters” T-shirts, face masks, lanyards, towels, hand sanitisers, Vitamin D tablets as well as key essential items including shampoo, soap, disposable shaver, toothbrush and toothpaste etc. These items were kindly sponsored by DSM, Lazada, P&G, Singtel, TS Group, Zero1, and will be distributed by logistics and transport partner Shalom Movers.

To further encourage our migrant workers during this pandemic, NTUC also rallied the Labour Movement family to pen our well wishes via a virtual mosaic wall. NTUC hopes that these messages will spur our migrant workers on during these trying times, lift their spirits and to encourage them to continue being strong. Members of the public who wish to show their appreciation are also encouraged to share their well wishes and post their photos on the virtual mosaic wall from now till 13 June 2021 via the following website: https://ntucmaydaymwde.com.

Manpower Minister Dr Tan See Leng, who is also the Guest-of-Honour, delivered the keynote address during the virtual show. He highlighted the importance of taking care of migrant workers’ mental well-being and how we must continue to protect the health and safety of migrant workers during this period of time. As Singapore enters Phase Two (Heightened Alert), the Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group under the Ministry of Manpower is also working with community partners to organise virtual activities to keep migrant workers engaged and lift their spirits.

On behalf of the Labour Movement, NTUC Central Committee Member and General Secretary of the United Workers of Electronics & Electrical Industries Tan Richard also shared a pre-recorded message to thank and appreciate our migrant workers for their contributions to Singapore. He recalled how they have stayed calm and made sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic; and even stepped up to help Singaporeans and their fellow countrymen here. He also reaffirmed the commitment of NTUC, MWC and tripartite partners in continuing to look after the welfare of our migrant workers.
