A total of 10 key employers in the power and gas industry have committed to partner the Union of Power and Gas Employees (UPAGE) to upskill their workers through Company Training Committees (CTC). (Refer to Annex A) This commitment was sealed earlier this morning in conjunction with the Singapore International Energy Week 2019, and witnessed by Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Chan Chun Sing; Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and NTUC Deputy Secretary-General, Mr Koh Poh Koon; UPAGE President Mr Tay Seng Chye; UPAGE General Secretary and NTUC Vice President Mr Abdul Samad Bin Abdul Wahab; UPAGE Executive Secretary Mr S Thiagarajan, amongst key union leaders and management partners. (Refer to Annex B)
The CTCs will see the union working together with the respective companies to coordinate efforts to communicate and implement training plans for workers across the sector’s value chain, in tandem with developments brought about by industry transformation. This includes identifying jobs that are at risk of disruption; building new competencies and mapping out new skills requirements; and enhancing productivity for workers through equipping them with adaptive, technology and technical skills. A total of at least 4,000 out of 5,500 workers employed in the sector could potentially benefit.
Mr Abdul Samad Bin Abdul Wahab, General Secretary of UPAGE, said, “The power and gas sector is undergoing significant transformation. To ensure that our workers are better prepared for the future, UPAGE is committed to help our workers build their capabilities and upgrade their skills as the sector powers up to build a sustainable, smart-energy future. It is heartening that these 10 companies have pledged their collective commitment to partner the union. We look forward to working with all parties through this sector-based approach, to uplift workers across all levels, so that ultimately both company and worker can benefit.”
UPAGE One of Four Recipients of the Singapore Energy Award 2019
As part of the Singapore International Energy Week, UPAGE was also one of four recipients to be awarded the Singapore Energy Award 2019. The award recognised the union for playing an instrumental role in rallying the workforce to support the liberalisation and restructuring of the industry; pushing for training and upskilling of the workforce; and institutionalising strong sectoral tripartism for peaceful and harmonious Industrial Relations.
