The last day of the NTUC National Delegates’ Conference (NDC) held on 16 October 2019 at the Orchid Country Club saw the unveiling of a new 21-member NTUC Central Committee (CC).
The NTUC CC is NTUC’s highest governing body and will be responsible for steering the Labour Movement towards NTUC’s 2023 vision, with six new members onboard. The committee will hold a four-year term from 2019 to 2023.
The new NTUC CC has elected Ms Mary Liew from the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union as President; Mr Ng Chee Meng as Secretary-General (SG); and Mr Arasu Duraisamy from Singapore Port Workers’ Union as Secretary for Financial Affairs.
Mr Ong Hwee Liang from SIA Engineering Company Engineers and Executives Union; Ms K Thanaletchimi from Healthcare Services Employees’ Union; and Mr Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab from Union of Power and Gas Employees will serve as Vice-Presidents.
Mr Koh Poh Koon was also elected as the Deputy Secretary-General. Meanwhile, Ms Cham Hui Fong and Mr Patrick Tay were elected as Assistant Secretaries-General.
New members in the NTUC CC are Mr Raymond Chin from Union of Security Employees, Mr Lim Teck Chuan from Metal Industries Workers’ Union, Mr Lim Wen Sheng from Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union, Mr Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari from the Amalgamated Union of Public Employees, Mr Sazali Zainal from Singapore Industrial and Services Employees’ Union, and Mr Ken Tan from Public Utilities Board Employees’ Union.
At a media briefing, Ms Liew said: “I’d like to thank all the support given to us by all our delegates. As the President, I look forward to working with the new NTUC CC team. We are forging towards the future so we can better represent our workers. Every worker matters and this is important to us. We have a lot of work to do as we move forward.”
Union delegates elect the NTUC Central Committee every four years by secret ballot from among nominated candidates.
The NTUC CC then elects among themselves one President, one Secretary-General, three Vice-Presidents, one Secretary for Financial Affairs, up to three Deputy Secretaries-General, and up to five Assistant Secretaries-General.
