Much can be learned from the values of our pioneer leaders as we continue to advance the interests of our workers today.

This was shared by NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng who was guest-of-honour at the Union of Power and Gas Employees’ (UPAGE) 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference. The event, attended by 170 guests comprising union leaders and delegates, management and tripartite partners, took place on 20 August 2018 at the Orchid Country Club.

Paying special tribute to UPAGE’s founding president, the late Abdul Rahman Mahbob, and pioneer leaders, SG Ng lauded their dedication and commitment towards advancing the interests of members.

He also highlighted how despite the challenges in the early days of the union’s development, the pioneer leaders had understood the need for workers to embrace a spirit of learning to remain employable. To achieve that, they had worked hard to understand the ground, build trust with their employers and forge a strong tripartite relationship.

He concluded that in today’s challenging work landscape, training only helps workers keep up. Upskilling is key for them to grow in their careers.

This is where the union has done well with successful leadership renewal and collaborative efforts with management partners to help train and upgrade workers so that they can continue to keep ahead of the changes and challenges in the energy and power sector.
