1 U Movies – The exclusive movies club set up by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) for union members turned ONE!
2 Today, U Movies celebrated its first year anniversary at Lido Shaw theatres. Eight halls in Lido theatres, totaling 2238-seaters, were reserved exclusively for members to thank and reward them for their unwavering support towards U Movies.
3 Four blockbuster movies which included “Eragon”, “Night At The Museum”, “Curse of the Golden Flower” and “Charlotte’s Web” were screened at these theatre halls. 120 children from NTUC Childcare whose families are in the lower income bracket, together with 50 elderly from selected homes were invited to join in this joyous occasion to view the movie, Charlotte's Web.
4 Since its inception in December 2005, U Movies has built up a strong base of 7,000 members. Apart from discounted movie vouchers, members also get to enjoy weekly movies contest, bi-annually movies screening and educational tours. U Movies also has a dedicated movie review team made up of five volunteers to share movie reviews and critics with the members. U Movies targets to increase its membership base to 10,000 by the first quarter of 2007.
5 Through a joint collaboration between NTUC Membership and Shaw Organisation, U Movies aimed to bring value and enhance the members’ movies experience. The joint collaboration brought about considerable savings of $140,000 for union members. A total of 70,000 Shaw vouchers have been sold at NTUC Centre and strategic Cheers outlets in the past year.
6 “We are happy that our movie events and activities, such as monthly screenings, monthly website contests have received overwhelming response in the first year of U Movies. We hope this party will draw all our supporters together to celebrate U Movies 1st year anniversary,” said Mr. Neo Gim Kian, Director of Membership Department and Assistant Executive Secretary of the United Workers of Electronic and Electrical Industries.
7 Mr Lim Swee Say, Deputy Secretary-General of NTUC joined the U Movies members in this first year anniversary celebration. Movie tickets priced at $5 per ticket went on sale from 11 December onwards at Lido Cineplex and were snapped up within days. Besides enjoying the movie, all members also brought home an exclusive U Movies 1st Anniversary souvenir.
