SMOU Brings A Smile To Seniors At Christmas

Some 35 seniors from the Henderson Senior Citizens’ Home, the adopted charity of the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), enjoyed a day trip to the Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa on 12 December 2011 for a Christmas Celebration.

The day trip, organised by SMOU, saw seven representatives from the union putting in their best to engage and bring joy and laughter to the seniors in the Christmas season.

Spending half a day at the museum, many seniors were glad to have the opportunity to relive the past shipping merchant routes which some might even remember experiencing. The Typhoon Theatre gave the seniors a 4D experience of a typhoon, complete with thunder, lightning and water droplets.

The seniors also had a good time learning from the artifacts, especially with help of the English and Cantonese speaking guides from the museum. The seniors also amused themselves with the interactive stations during the tour. Ending the trip with a traditional Christmas lunch of turkey, the seniors enjoyed themselves in the company of SMOU representatives and their peers.

Expressed a gleeful Madam Ong Hoon Tee, 78: “I’m happy to come here today. I like everything here. The food is good. SMOU is very good (to organise this)!” Mr Robert Chung, 68, agreed: “My Christmas is extra special this year because of this trip.”

In conjunction with NTUC’s Care and Share initiative, SMOU is devoted to contributing to support the less fortunate and sharing the joy with all.

SIASU Brings Christmas Cheer To Children

By Josef Ho | Treasurer, Singapore Airlines Staff Union

On 13 December 2011, Brother Logannaathan, General Secretary of Singapore Airlines Staff Union (SIASU) led a delegation of Executive Council Members, Shop Stewards and Ordinary Members to celebrate Christmas with beneficiaries of The Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore. These beneficiaries belong to two groupings in the association, namely, Goodwill, Rehabilitation and Occupation Workshop (GROW) and Day Activity Centre (DAC).

GROW and DAC provide vocational training for beneficiaries who are primarily suffering from Cerebral Palsy or other associated disability conditions. A total of 141 beneficiaries turned out for the Christmas celebration.

The 3-hour programme kicked off with two dance items contributed by the beneficiaries. Despite their physical disabilities, the performers gave a very hilarious and marvelous performance. A snake charmer and magic show performance by SIASU members brought roars of laughter and humour to the event. The caroling, sing-a-long session and a sumptuous buffet provided a grand finale to the occasion.

The celebration is a welfare project organised by SIASU, in conjunction with NTUC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. This is the second project organised by SIASU. Prior to this event, SIASU had organised a visit to the Singapore Red Cross Home for the Disabled.

nEbO Cares To Do More

1) Reduce & Recycle: Save Our Mother Earth

nEbO Care, together with more than 3,000 ITE College East students, came together to “Do Good” for the environment and the underprivileged. The objectives are for youths to educate the public on ways to protect the environment as well as help to raise funds for its beneficiary – Lutheran Community Care Services Ltd. The students used recyclable materials such as cans, old clothing, and so on to produce items that could be sold to raise funds. After weeks of sales, a total of $5,000 was raised and donated.

2) Paint A New Hope

nEbO Care successfully organised their new initiative to paint the homes of elderly residents staying in one-room or two-room flats on 9 December 2011. The committee and youth volunteers geared up with masks and gloves and put in their hearts and souls to help get rid of all the dirt on the walls and put on a new coat of paint to make the flats a better place to stay. All the flats were painted within a day with the help of more than 50 volunteers.

NTUC’s U Family and NTUC Eldercare Doing Good Together

By Muneerah Bee Mohamed Iqbal

With the help of the U Care Fund, two bodies within the Labour Movement came together to Do Good for the elderly.

On 26 November, 3 and 10 December 2011, NTUC’s U Family and NTUC Eldercare Co-operative Limited provided a unique and meaningful family bonding activity. About 100 families volunteered to visit the Silver ACE @ Redhill, the second Senior Activity Centre (SAC) managed by NTUC Eldercare which serves the needy seniors living in designated clusters of Housing and Development Board (HDB) rental blocks in Redhill.

During each two-hour session, families served soup and meals to the elderly, engaged them in activities and provided companionship.
