The Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) has successfully won a secret ballot to unionise Twelve Cupcakes after the majority of workers voted in favour of the union. The ballot was administered by the Ministry of Manpower.

The FDAWU stated this win on 26 February 2021.

The union first announced its intention to unionise the confectionary firm on 16 February 2021.

The company had previously been making the news for underpaying their foreign employees for around two years.

The company was fined $119,500 in court on 12 January 2021. The workers have since been recompensed.

“This resounding victory reaffirms the workers’ desire for the union to improve their welfare and work prospects. FDAWU would like to thank the workers who have supported this unionisation effort and we stand ready to represent them,” said FDAWU General-Secretary Tan Hock Soon.

Mr Tan also said that the union is looking forward to working closely with the management to improve the workers’ well-being, uplift wages and upskill the workers in preparation for the economy’s recovery.

Taking to Facebook, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng gave thanks to both union leaders and NTUC staff who helped with the unionisation process.

He said: “I applaud FDAWU for unionising Twelve Cupcakes. I believe this is the right move to protect our workers, to speak up for them and push for fair treatment, wages and benefits.

“We will work immediately towards these and safeguard workers’ interests. Over time, our union will partner management to foster win-win programmes.”

About FDAWU

FDAWU currently represents some 55,000 workers in the food services and hospitality industry.

The union endeavours to partner with more companies and workers to uplift both businesses and their workforce, while helping them recover from the impact of COVID-19.
