The National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with ComfortDelgro Group (CDG) on 3 May 2016 that will better represent professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) within the company through the 4Ps: protection, progression, placement and privileges.

This will see the formation of a PME branch committee – a first in the transport industry – that workers can approach to seek union assistance.

Better Development

The agreement signed is good as the number of PMEs within the company increases, said CDG group human resource officer Daisy Chan.

This is reflective of the growing number of PMEs in the Singapore workforce, and the Labour Movement has been upping its ante to cater to the needs of this group of workers through initiatives like the U Associate programme.

NTWU Executive Secretary Melvin Yong said: “We want to provide relevant professional development opportunities for our PME members. We hope to develop and build useful networks for our PMEs to interact (with each other).”

The MOA signing also signalled the start of the inaugural CDG PME Week, which brings a series of talks and workshops to the company’s premises for workers to attend. These include a SkillsFuture talk for career development and legal workshop for workers to know their rights.

Daniel Cheong, who is the PME branch committee’s pro-tem president, said: “This is a good step forward. Not many PMEs today are aware of how unions can help and our efforts in the near future will focus on reaching out to them.”
