The National Trades Unions Congress (NTUC) U Associate programme welcomed its 12th NTUC U Associate on Monday, 25 May 2015, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Singapore Institution of Safety Officers (SISO), to bring on board Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) professionals into the NTUC family. The agreement was signed between Mr Andrew H.S. Tan, Honorary Secretary of the SISO, and Mr Vivek Kumar, Director of NTUC U Associate and Future Leaders Programme.
Welcoming SISO as the Labour Movement’s latest U Associate, Mr Vivek Kumar, said the collaboration will further the interests of the WSH professionals in Singapore.
“Workplace safety and health (WSH) is a growing area of opportunity for our professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) and we are already seeing competition for good WSH jobs. Hence, I am pleased that SISO, as the leading professional association in the sector, has decided to partner the Labour Movement as a U Associate. We plan to work together to help our WSH professionals chart progressive careers in Singapore, and even at regional and global level," said Mr Vivek Kumar.
Established in 1975, SISO has more than 1,000 members who are not only safety officers but also specialists in occupational safety, health and environment, fire-safety, occupational hygiene and ergonomics. In an industry with about 3,000 registered safety officers in Singapore, SISO represents one third of the total workforce who are in the practice.
Mr Seet Choh San, President of the SISO, believes that the partnership with NTUC will create professional development opportunities to enhance the competency and skills of its members. “SISO and NTUC are moving in the same direction to secure better jobs and careers for our workers. With the globalisation of markets, WSH professionals need to upgrade our skillsets and broaden our competencies. This partnership with NTUC is a strong platform for us to progress,” said Mr Seet.
