In view of the recent news that migrant workers are among those infected with the Zika Virus, Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, Chairman of Migrant Workers’ Centre, would like to share the following response.
“The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) is concerned about the recent news that migrant workers are among those infected with the Zika Virus.
Migrant workers living or working near the affected area in Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive; as well as the other areas of concern (Sembawang Drive, Kranji Road, Joo Chiat Place, Senoko South Road, Toh Guan Road East and Lorong 101 Changi) should observe greater care and vigilance against the spread of the virus. We would like to advise all migrant brothers and sisters to take special care at this period of time and urge employers to support them in taking preventive measures such as providing mosquito repellent while working outdoors as an additional precaution to prevent mosquito bites.
Migrant workers should seek medical attention immediately if they show symptoms such as fever, rashes, joint and muscle pains, headaches and red eyes. Zika is generally a mild disease. Therefore, there should be no reason for their work tenure in Singapore to be affected.
The MWC will scale up its outreach and education at migrant worker dormitories and congregation areas in the coming weeks. It is our hope to spread this message of vigilance and social responsibility to as many migrant brothers and sisters as possible so that we can combat the virus together as a community.
Migrant workers who require any assistance or have doubts that they wish to clarify can call the Centre’s 24-hour Helpline at 6536-2692.”
