The late Dr Moh Chong Tau was the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Makino Asia Pte Ltd (Makino) from November 2001 to August 2015. He made significant contributions to the Labour Movement through labour-management relations with the Metal Industries Workers’ Union (MIWU).
Dr Moh was a strong believer in the Singaporean core as a way to reduce dependency on foreign manpower. He actively recruited Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents to join Makino regardless of age. They form the majority of employees today.
He was also known for his commitment to create better jobs and upskill employees to increase their capabilities and employability. He was active in the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) committee for the precision engineering industry and committed more than 300 employees under the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications framework and Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience.
Under his leadership, Makino became an early adopter of Labour Movement’s initiatives such as the Cheaper, Better, Faster strategy and re-employment. He revamped processes and job scopes and assured mature workers of employment as long as they were fit and able to perform their job.
