To meet the changing needs and aspirations of our working people, it is crucial for the Labour Movement to also evolve so as to remain relevant. To help working people achieve sustainable skills upgrading and fulfil their career aspirations amid technological disruption, the Labour Movement will work together with all stakeholders to develop relevant training courses so that our working people will be equipped with the right skills to overcome new challenges and grab new opportunities.

$100 million Boost to the NTUC-Education and Training Fund

The NTUC-Education and Training Fund (NETF) was set up to help our working people in skills upgrading and re-skilling. The NTUC announced that it has raised a total of $25 million for NETF at the May Day Rally Appreciation Lunch today. This will enable us to inject an additional $100 million, achieving the halfway mark of $200 million, into the NETF as we continue to reach out to more donors in the coming months. Investment income from the NETF trust fund will be used to fund courses through course fees subsidies. Union members can tap on more than 3,200 training courses to enjoy course fee subsidy, capped at a maximum of $250 per year, under the Union Training Assistance Programme supported by the NETF. Looking ahead, we will also use the NETF investment income to catalyse new models of adult learning to hasten our speed-to-market turnaround time for working people.

With strong support from the Unions, U Associate, U SME, Government as well as corporate and individual donors who share our common objective in mobilising working people to embrace continuous lifelong learning, we will be able to push forth our goal to achieve sustainable skills upgrading for worker.

70 donors who have come on board to pledge their donations to the NETF were presented with Certificates of Appreciation by NTUC President Mary Liew and Secretary-General Chan Chun Sing. (Please see below for the list of donors).

Working Together to Achieve Sustainable Skills Upgrading Nationwide

NTUC will intensify our efforts to help working people acquire new knowledge and skills within the shortest speed-to-market turnaround time through our continued partnership with 14 Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Singapore. We have also partnered Nanyang Technological University and Singapore University of Social Sciences to offer over 100 blended courses since its launch in May 2016, that enable working professionals to update their knowledge and acquire relevant skills without the need to pursue a full degree qualification. These collaborations will help to advance the professional development of our workforce quickly in preparation for future challenges.

The Labour Movement will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders such as the Government, companies, business owners and senior executives of small and medium-sized enterprises, freelancers and the self-employed as well as IHLs, to develop relevant training courses to meet the specific needs of our working people so that they can take on the jobs of tomorrow as the economy transforms.
