This month, as the Labour Movement (LM) holds a series of activities to celebrate May Day with our working people and tripartite partners, we also took the opportunity to show appreciation to domestic employees for their hard work and contributions. Domestic employees form a key part of our workforce. Thus, our LM, through the Centre for Domestic Employees, has been standing up for their fair treatment, welfare and wellbeing.
In this light, the LM has organised, for the first time ever, a May Day Domestic Employees Celebration at the Youth Park @ Somerset this afternoon from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Through an afternoon of interaction, activities and games, we were able to bond with some 1,000 domestic employees in appreciation of what they do for their employers and families.
"Domestic employees are part of our working people in Singapore too. Therefore, it is imperative for our Labour Movement to support them on workplace-related issues as well as to look after their needs. We appreciate their efforts in taking care of our homes and family members, while we are at work.” said Mr Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab, NTUC Central Committee Member and Co-Chairperson of the May Day Domestic Employees Celebration 2017.
As the LM encourages good employer-employee working relations, domestic employees were also invited to bring their employers along to partake in the festivities today. "Generally, employers here do take good care of their domestic employees, with some treating them like their own family. For example, with the help and support of her employers, one of the domestic employees, Juliet Madrillo learnt how to plan and manage her own business through enrolling in courses such as English, cooking, computer, as well as financial literacy. In fact, she is going to open a rice mill back in her home country in 2018 ”, added Mr Tan Richard, NTUC Central Committee Member and Co-Chairperson of the May Day Domestic Employees Celebration 2017.
Joining the domestic employees this afternoon was Guest-of-Honour, Mr Sam Tan, Minister of State (MOS) for Manpower. He was accompanied by NTUC President Ms Mary Liew and other NTUC Central Committee members. Together, they interacted with the domestic employees and presented 30 Thank You Cards, crafted by primary school children, to them at the Youth Park.
