Media Statement

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is saddened that its former President, Mr Robert Adolphus White, who had held office from 1966 to 1967, had passed away in Australia on 23 June 2008. We send our sincere condolences to his family.

The Labour Movement acknowledges the contributions of Mr White, known to many as R A White, as a dedicated, brave and charismatic union leader who had led the NTUC during Singapore’s uncertain but yet critical post-Independence period. Mr White’s leadership then had been vital to helping the Labour Movement re-orientate its thinking and focus in a new and volatile political and economic climate.

Formally the President of the Cable and Wireless Union, Mr White had cared and fought for the interests of the workers, particularly the lower-income workers, who were very concerned with bread and butter issues.

The union leaders of today and tomorrow have much to learn from the likes of R A White.
