The Elections Department (ELD) has designated Tuesday, 30 June 2020, as Nomination Day, where candidates contesting in the General Election will file their nomination papers at the various appointed nomination centres.

Meanwhile, Polling Day will be on Friday 10 July 2020, as declared by the Returning Officer, National Environment Agency CEO Tan Meng Dui.

The news came after President Halimah Yacob issued the Writ of Election for the General Election, following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s live address to the nation at 4pm on 23 June 2020.

Mr Lee said: “On effective campaigning, the Elections Department [ELD] has also made arrangements and issued guidelines. Candidates can still go out to do house campaigning in person, provided they observe a safe distance in precautions.”

Candidates from the Labour Movement are expected to be fielded at the upcoming polls.

Nomination Centres

Candidates need to meet several criteria before they can enter the nomination centres.

The candidate has been issued a Political Donation Certificate; he or she needs to be accompanied by a proposer, a seconder and at least four assentors; and for Group Representation Constituency (GRC) candidates, the candidate in the group has been issued the relevant certificate from either the Malay Community Committee or the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee.

Polling Day

Under the law, Polling Day at any General Election shall be a public holiday, and every employer should allow their employees a reasonable period of time for voting.

In his address, Mr Lee said: “The elections department will be implementing additional precautions on polling day. We are setting up more polling stations than in previous elections to reduce crowding.

“There will be safe distancing measures practised at the polling stations voters will be allocated specific time slots to vote and seniors will be given priority to vote before others on effective campaigning.”
