The State Funeral Procession for our former president Mr S R Nathan began from Parliament House at 2pm.

As a mark of respect, more than 300 NTUC staff, union leaders and members of the public braved the afternoon heat and haze to gather along the front of NTUC Centre at 1 Marina Boulevard to bid a final farewell to Singapore’s longest serving president.

LANDMARKS OF SIGNIFICANCE

The cortege passed through a number of landmarks which were significant to Mr Nathan.

These included City Hall, where he reviewed three editions of the National Day Parade; the Fullerton Hotel, the site of the former Marine Department where Mr Nathan spent the early days of his public service career as a Seamen’s Welfare Officer; and the NTUC Centre, home to the Labour Movement which Mr Nathan had described as having a special place in his heart.

The final stop for the cortege was at the University Cultural Centre, where his casket was received by Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong; Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, and several other dignitaries.
