Media Statement
In his announcement today on changes to ensure smoother flowing roads, Transport Minister Raymond Lim said that the road tax for all vehicles including taxis, will be reduced by 15%. In fact, Mr Lim urged taxi operators to pass on the savings to all taxi drivers.
The Taxi Operators’ Associations (TOA) are pleased to note that taxi companies have agreed to pass on these savings entirely to their hirers so that taxi drivers can benefit from these savings. This demonstrates the strong bilateral relationship between the TOA and taxi companies.
Mr Seng Han Thong, Advisor to the TOA, said, “I urge taxi companies to plough back these savings into the taxi drivers’ Medisave Accounts so that drivers, who are essentially self-employed, can build up their Medisave funds for healthcare expenses for themselves and their families. This will strengthen the social safety net of taxi drivers.”
The savings from the Government’s announcement on taxis’ road tax cuts is estimated to be worth $5 million and will benefit all taxi drivers.
