TOA express concerns of rising operating costs for taxi drivers

17 June 2008

Media Statement

1 With the additional ERP gantries within the Central Business District (CBD) coming into operation in July 2008, the Taxi Operators’ Associations (TOA) have expressed concerns over the potential effects on taxi drivers’ increasing operating costs. This is in addition to the ever-rising fuel prices which have gone up rapidly in recent months.

2 In view of these changes in operating conditions, TOA have initiated discussions with the taxi companies to help the drivers.

3 TOA noted that taxi companies have responded with various measures such as passing on the 15% road tax savings entirely to their hirers and giving fuel rebates to drivers. In addition, ComfortDelGro, Trans-Cab and Smart Automobile have also come up with specific rebates so as to help drivers with the increase in ERP expenses.

4 We would like to urge other taxi companies to do more for their drivers, and will continue to engage all taxi companies to look for ways to help drivers alleviate their increasing operating costs.

5 TOA urge all taxi drivers to continue to maintain high service standards and provide quality service so that commuters will be willing to use and pay for their service.

6 TOA have also engaged our tripartite partners, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the taxi companies, to express our concerns and explore the various options to help soften impact on drivers.
