In another initiative under NTUC’s U Career Network, e2i has partnered Workforce Singapore (WSG) to offer career support initiatives targeted at PMETs keen on a career in the manufacturing industry.

This was announced by Minister for Manpower Lim Swee Say during the Adapt & Grow Manufacturing Day & Technology Showcase at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability on 27 April 2017.

Complementing the event was a one-day job fair that saw 31 companies offering over 900 job vacancies. The fair attracted about 825 people.

“With an increasing focus on innovation and technology, there will be no lack of good jobs and career progression in our future manufacturing industry… This is why we will continue to do more to help our local workers take up jobs and careers in our future manufacturing industry,” said Minister Lim.

Embracing Opportunities in Manufacturing

The initiatives include a SkillsFuture Career Advisor Programme and eight new Professional Conversion Programmes (PCPs) to help PMETs better understand Industry 4.0.

Industry 4.0 is the trend that the manufacturing industry is heading towards and is characterised by increased automation, digitalisation, cyber-physical systems and networked production.

Describing the SkillsFuture Career Advisor Programme, NTUC Assistant Director-General and e2i CEO Gilbert Tan said: “e2i is geared to help our companies and workers harness the benefits of Industry 4.0. Being close to our employers, training providers and workers, we can enable professionals to stay updated and deepen their competencies to meet the industry needs and partner companies on manpower and productivity solutions.”

e2i has gathered 75 industry mentors to share insights and advice Singaporeans interested in joining the manufacturing industry.

The SkillsFuture Career Advisor Programme is part of WSG’s Adapt & Grow initiative and the 75 industry mentors are all volunteers from across 10 different manufacturing industries that range from aerospace and aviation to building and construction, chemical, energy and power, medical technologies, biopharma science and precision engineering.

Jobseekers keen on being mentored can approach e2i’s career centres.

Sharing her inspiration for volunteering as a career advisor, Gemalto Pte Ltd’s Human Resource Manager Cheng Ai-Lee shared: “I have always loved helping others and this is a good opportunity for me to volunteer. Having been an engineer for 11 years before going into human resources and knowing the jobs available, I will be able to advise jobseekers looking for a career switch into manufacturing. What I say could be more convincing with my experience and my advice could be more relevant.”

New PCPs

Eight new PCPs were also launched to enable interested Singaporean PMETs to better transition into the manufacturing industry. The new PCPs will complement the existing manufacturing PCPs and include both entry- and mid-level positions. (See below for the list of new PCPs).

Minister Lim also shared that companies participating in these PCPs will get to enjoy wage and training subsidies for the PMETs they hire.

Eight New PCPs for PMETs

Entry-Level Positions: PCP for Component OEM Assistant Manager; PCP for Complex Equipment Assistant Manager; PCP for System Integrator Assistant Engineer; and PCP for System Integrator Engineer.

Mid-Level Positions: PCP for Component OEM Engineer; PCP for Complex Equipment Engineer; PCP for Regional Operations Manager; and PCP for Regional Technical Programme Manager.
