Stepping up for Essential Services

Each time you light up the gas to cook up a festive spread on a public holiday, there is someone back at work to make sure all goes well across the city.

For years, City Gas has provided gas to more than 750,000 homes round-the-clock through its extensive 2,900km network of underground piping, with the help of the men and women working quietly behind the scenes around-the-clock, even on public holidays.

“We live in a multi-racial society. I have Chinese, Indian, and Malay colleagues. We help each other when we need to celebrate our different holidays. I’ll be working on Lunar New Year so my Chinese colleagues can celebrate.

“When it comes to Hari Raya, they will help me out. We are like brothers in this company. We help each other whenever we can,” said a veteran of the gas industry, 59-year-old Mohd Roslan.

Passion for the Job

Mr Roslan has been with the company for three decades and has seen the gas industry evolve and now holds the position of senior plant controller.

“I really love my job. I wouldn’t be here for such a long time if there wasn’t any passion involved. I knew what I was getting myself into when I joined the industry years ago. I know that it is an important service to our nation and sometimes sacrifices must be made,” said Mr Roslan, in reference to working on public holidays for him and his colleagues.

Mr Roslan added that family support is important in this instance and if there are plans for a family outing, they schedule them in advance.

A Service to the Nation

As a City Gas Grade A technical officer, 41-year-old Derek Lau is a team leader who oversees the group of workers under him in the control room of the plant.

“My team knows that if they don’t do their job properly, the nation will suffer the consequences.

“We may not be known for the work that we do, but I know that I am doing my country a service. I don’t think we need to flaunt our work in public. We simply need to carry out our work and do it well. If we do not run this plant well, an entire nation will be affected,” he said.

Mr Lau added that they are a team and they need to have this mentality that they must work together.

“All of us do actually work closely together. Especially the older ones who have been in this industry for decades. Although they are not very outspoken, they know their job well. They are always there to guide the younger ones,” he said.

Moving forward, both Mr Lau and Mr Roslan hope to continue their service to the nation for as long as they can.

Mr Lau said: “We love our work and we love our nation. Working here helps us bring together these two things.”
