MWC’s first concern lies with the deceased and injured from last evening’s events. Our thoughts are with the front line officers who were injured and we wish them a speedy recovery. MWC has obtained the details of the deceased worker and we have contacted his employer to ensure that all the necessary support and follow up is provided.
We urge Singaporeans to remain calm. We do not condone the actions of the rioters, and we are confident that the authorities will carry out their investigations thoroughly and fairly to bring those responsible to task. We should not allow the ill-placed actions of a few to taint the majority of migrant workers in Singapore who are law-abiding. They are here to make an honest living and contribute positively to our country.
MWC will do its part to offer emotional and legal assistance to those affected, and our ongoing programmes with our partners such as HealthServe will allow us to jointly address any of these needs.
We appeal to migrant workers to observe the laws of Singapore and caution them against taking matters into their own hands. We urge migrant workers with any issues to come forward to MWC, so that we may assist or advise them accordingly.
The events of last evening clearly show that peace and harmony should never be taken for granted. MWC has worked tirelessly on the social and community integration of migrant workers and will continue to increase our efforts in this area. Let’s continue to reach out to them at our workplace and live place.
