Workers are not the only ones the Labour Movement cares about. In May, NTUC U Care Caring∙Sharing∙Reaching Out (U Care CSR) dedicated the month to reaching out to the needy in Singapore.

Caring for the Elderly
Some 15 volunteers from the Sembawang Shipyard Employees’ Union (SSEU-Sembawang) took 20 beneficiaries from the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick to the Jurong Bird Park on 8 May 2014 for a date with nature. The beneficiaries also received grocery items such as milk powder and Milo, sponsored by the union.

At the Happy Villa Home, 13 beneficiaries received a gift of love from the Executive Council members of the Singapore Port Workers Union (SPWU) when they paid the elderly residents a visit on 15 May 2014 with dried food products. The union leaders also conducted games to promote the residents’ mental well-being.

Caring for the Young
Meanwhile, 24 volunteers from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore Staff Union (IRASSU) brought 19 children and two staff from the Children’s Aid Society to the Mint Museum on 31 May 2014. The Society has been the union’s adopted charity since 2010.

Another 400 parents and children from various NTUC First Campus’ My First Skool centres visited the River Safari on 24 May 2014. The trip, a first for many of them, was organised by the Bright Horizons Fund under its Family and School Together (FAST) programme which aims to create special bonding time between parents and children of low-income families through learning outings.

The Fund, started by NTUC First Campus in 2007, is supported by major donors such as NTUC-U Care Fund. It also helps lower-income children benefit from quality pre-school programmes in My First Skool.

One parent who went for the trip with her two children was Madam Lim.

“We felt very blessed and thankful for this family bonding day. We really appreciate your arrangements from the bottom of our hearts,” she said.
