This annual event is especially significant this year as NTUC Childcare celebrates its 10th year as a co-operative. However, NTUC’s involvement with the childcare industry dates back even longer to 25 years ago, when NTUC Childcare Services, a department of the NTUC, took over the running of 11 childcare centres from the then Ministry of Social Affairs in 1977. Then, it was done with the social aim of encouraging more women to enter and remain in the workforce. In those pioneering days, childcare facilities were basic. Staff were employed as guardians to look after the children.

Today, childcare services have improved by leaps and bounds. Staff are no longer just child-minders. They are qualified teachers who have undergone formal training in early childhood care and education. Childcare centres are equipped with facilities that contribute towards an environment that encourages children to learn and grow.

NTUC Childcare is committed to continue providing better childcare services. These include a structured curriculum, better facilities, and higher trained staff. This has made more and more parents aware of NTUC Childcare’s quality and value-for-money proposition, leading to higher demand for its childcare services.

NTUC Childcare centres are also conveniently located at major housing estates, offering parents the ease of finding a childcare centre at their doorsteps.

Serving the Community
NTUC Childcare became a co-operative in 1992. This step was taken to ensure that childcare services are clearly focussed. Since then, its social objective of providing childcare services to working Singaporeans has been successfully met through its chain of more than 30 childcare centres island-wide. And it is still growing to serve the needs of Singaporeans in newer housing estates.

Through affordable childcare fees, NTUC Childcare provides excellent value for money. The quality of the curriculum and staff both combine to make NTUC Childcare the best alternative to home care for many working parents. With NTUC Childcare, parents can be assured that their children are well-cared for. Qualified and experienced teachers encourage the development of each child to his or her full potential. NTUC Childcare’s affordability also supports the government’s efforts in encouraging more women to return to the workforce, allowing them to contribute to the nation’s progress. However, NTUC Childcare’s purpose has shifted to supporting working parents, rather than the narrower objective of encouraging women to work as we feel this objective is increasingly irrelevant.

Every year, costs increase: in prices of clothes, food, and transport. NTUC Childcare faces cost pressures also, as wage costs form the bulk of operating costs. However, NTUC Childcare has maintained its childcare fees at the median of the industry through its scale of operation. As the largest single provider of childcare services in Singapore, NTUC Childcare allows working parents to continue placing their children at its centres for assured quality in care and education.
