Skills upgrading and multi-skilling to allow better opportunities

At a recent learning journey to the Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium (HISA), unionists saw how HISA has allowed employees to have better opportunities to progress in their careers through skill-upgrading and multi-skilling. Cross-deployment has also allowed employees to have a wage adjustment.

To allow employees to have better opportunities to progress in their careers, HISA’s Security and Bell Service employees undergo skills upgrading before they can be crossdeployed. Take Faizal Mas’odi for example. The 35-year-old joined HISA as a Security Officer in January 2011. He was selected to undergo 40 hours of WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) training.

“During the training, we were attached to the concierge team. In the beginning we did bellman duties, handle arrival and departure of guests and sending luggage to the guest rooms,” said Mr Faizal. Having completed his training, Mr Faizal was promoted to a Security Executive. Today, he is able to be cross-deployed, working both in the Concierge and Security Department with the necessary skill sets for both.

In fact, in order to be productive, security officers in HISA will distribute newspapers to rooms when they are going on their rounds in the morning. In addition, Mr Faizal also trains fellow colleagues. Hence, with the multiple skill sets he possesses and by handling guest related requests, he can put his day-to-day routine into case studies and activities for his training.

With the cross-deployment, Mr Faizal has received a wage adjustment of about 15 per cent.

“I’m very happy with the cross-deployment and the wage adjustment, because I never expected that...it has helped a lot because I have two kids at home and with the salary adjustment, I don’t have to worry about money,” says Mr Faizal.
