“Silver Learning Initiative” – A Joint Project between the “Centre For Seniors” and “YAH! Community College” to provide Lifelong Learning Opportunities for Seniors JOINT PRESS RELEASE The newest player to join the bustling eldercare sector, the Centre For Seniors (CFS) has tied up with YAH! Community College to provide lifelong learning programmes for seniors. A brainchild of Minister Lim Boon Heng, CFS is set to become a one-stop centre to take care of the learning, employment and emotional needs of senior citizens. YAH! Community College is a non-profit project of the Marine Parade Family Service Centre (MPFSC) and has been providing lifelong learning programmes for seniors since 2005. For a start the CFS has tied up with YAH! Community College to offer the Certificate in Lifelong Learning. The aim is to promote the spirit of active ageing by inculcating positive attitude and empirical knowledge about aging. The course enables students to understand the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects of ageing and to discover their strengths and potential to live a fulfilling life. Participants will also learn better communication skills and explore issues related to family and social relationship. Life-skills development is another key aspect of the course. Experts are invited to discuss about gerontology, financial management, stress management, home safety and other interest-based skills such as singing, magic or Han Yu Pin Yin. Participants will also be exposed to community volunteering opportunities. The course covers a total of 100 learning hours spread over four months. More than 400 seniors have benefited from this programme. Outstanding examples of the spirit of learning can be seen among some of the new students enrolled this year. This includes the oldest student since the project’s inauguration - an 87-year-old senior. Another example is a student who was unable to complete the course two years ago due to a stroke. She has since re-enrolled in the course after her recuperation. The programme is targeted at persons aged 50 and above with ability to converse in Mandarin and write simple Chinese words. The course is open for registration with immediate effect. Details of the course are as follows: Commencement Date : 14 April 2007 Training Venue : Centre For Seniors Registration : YAH!
