Be prepared to take on three skillsets at the same time when the Tuas Port begins operations in 2021.

One example is the combination an operations executive, engineer and IT professional all intertwined into one.

That was the message to members from Port Officers’ Union (POU) President Benjamin Tang Chun Wai.

SkillsFuture Roadshows

POU held six roadshows at various port terminals between April and June to showcase the future skills needed and encourage union members to make use of their SkillsFuture Credit to upskill.

“We organised these roadshows to impress upon all members the importance of lifelong learning and the need to take ownership of one's skills,”said Mr Tang.

In all, some 400 POU members attended the roadshows, which also had booths from NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and NTUC LearningHub on the upskilling courses available for the port sector.

Mr Tang added that POU’s efforts to instill the importance of future skills does not end with the roadshows.

Next on the cards, professional development seminars for its members. The first session will be held on 28 and 29 June with a speaker from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

Taking on a New Role

One union member who recently upskilled to take on more roles in PSA is 31-year-old senior mechanical engineer Chen Tian’en.

He started off as an operations executive at the Brani Terminal’s yard crane section.

“After three years as an operations executive, I decided to give the engineering department a try to see how to better enhance the synergy between operations and engineering. I learnt the fundamentals of how to maintain cranes and enhance their reliability. For that, I attended some in-house courses and applied hands on what I had learnt,” said Mr Tien.
