The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) have committed $22 million spread over a five-year period to encourage more locals to explore seafaring careers under the Tripartite Nautical Training Award (TNTA) programme.

This announcement was made by Guest-of-Honour Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong during SMOU’s annual Lunar New Year celebrations on 6 February 2014.

Under the TNTA Programme, 400 Singaporeans will be given a chance to pursue a seafaring career.

“This will allow more Singaporeans to pursue exciting nautical careers and provide the maritime industry with a healthy pipeline of young and competent officers,” added Mr Gan.

The funding support from WDA and NTUC e2i will cover training fees and a monthly allowance of S$1,400 per cadet during the 31-month course. SMOU’s training arm, the Wavellink Maritime Institute will provide the training support.

Since 2009, 13 shipping employers who have participated in TNTA’s place-and-train programme have provided jobs to Singaporeans. To date, more than $6 million has been invested in the initiative.
