The Labour Movement (LM), being a partner in nation building, has been supporting workers through Singapore’s transformation and development. From our days as a shipping village to now, a bustling city, the LM has been adapting and changing to serve the changing aspirations, expectations and needs of our working population.
The generations that have built Singapore up to what it is today have now become veterans and the lessons they have learnt through their careers are valuable nuggets that should be shared with our younger generation, especially if we want to build a resilient and future-ready workforce.
To encourage the sharing of career values and lessons, Young NTUC, in collaboration with NTUC Income, organised the ‘Tales from the Heart’ project on 12 August 2017, where 30 veterans shared their career values and lessons in a human library format with the next generation of young workers. Through this, we were able to show appreciation for our veterans and send a message that regardless of the passage of time, the younger workers will always have something to learn from them. This project closes off Young NTUC’s U Heart 2017 initiatives and 100 youths from the LM network as well as schools and the public joined in the sharing. The veterans shared their experiences and thoughts along with the following career values:
i. Honesty and Integrity
ii. Work ethics
iii. Dependability and responsibility
iv. Positive attitude
v. Adaptability
vi. Self-motivation
vii. Loyalty
viii. Resilience
Mdm Sim Siew Lect, 61 years old, is one of the ‘human book’ that youths can borrow to learn about career values such as her Adaptability, Resilience and Positive Attitude in approaching her work. Mdm Siew is the General Secretary for the Singapore Union of Broadcasting Employees (SUBE). In her 36 years of working for Mediacorp Pte Ltd, she has been through multiple roles from being an Operations Assistant to a Childcare Supervisor, an Admin Officer and finally an Assistant Operations Manager. Through it all, she has undergone many skills training and upgrading and served SUBE members enthusiastically by improving her union knowledge through several courses.
Mr Desmond Choo stated “Our pioneers have built Singapore through hard work and a set of values that define Singaporeans. Hard work, perseverance and inventiveness are also some key values that will see us through challenging times and build an even stronger nation.”
Since Young NTUC’s U Heart started in 2016, there have been more than 75 U Heart events aimed at five pillars of the HEART: Home, Environment, Appreciate, Respect and Tenacity. This year’s U Heart saw 52 projects ranging from house ‘refreshing’ for low-income families, to bonding activities with the elderly and play dates with under privileged children. Collectively, U Heart 2017 has touched over 6,453 beneficiaries with 2,267 volunteers from the LM, communities and the public.
