The Singapore Power Group (SP Group), together with the Union of Power and Gas Employees (UPAGE), have signed a Memorandum of Agreement on 20 November 2019 to form a Company Training Committee (CTC) as SP Group commits S$35M to upskill 3,600 workers over the next three years.
This comes in view of the energy sector’s rapid transformation, which comprises digitalisation and rising customer expectations, as well as the commitment made earlier during the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2019 to upskill the workers in the sector.
The CTC will be tasked to identify jobs affected by industry changes, implement training programmes and map out new skills and competencies to attain work prospects for workers.
The S$35M would go to further develop competencies in the areas of customer service, cybersecurity, data analytics, safety and skills for a digital workplace.
During the CTC signing, UPAGE General Secretary Abdul Samad bin Abdul Wahab shared: “Some of our workers are anxious with changes coming their way, as there is fear that technology will be taking over jobs.
“Through this CTC, we hope to allay this fear by explaining and showcasing how upskilling and taking on higher value jobs will lead to better wages and work prospects.”
CEO of SP Group Wong Kim Yin added: “The energy industry is transforming, with the advent of new technology. We want to help our people adapt and prepare ahead of this potentially disruptive transformation.
NTUC Secretary General Ng Chee Meng, who was there to witness the signing, said: “We will continue to accelerate the formation of CTCs.
“Our union leaders will undergo training programmes such as Digitalisation, Business Process Modelling, Performance and Rewards Management, and Training Needs Analysis, to enable the work of the CTCs.”
