The Singapore Industrial & Services Employees’ Union (SISEU) has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving 100,000 members by 2020.
This was done at the union’s Ordinary Delegates’ Conference (ODC) on 4 July 2018 at the Orchid Country Club.
SISEU had 84,417 members as of March 2018, an increase of 6.6 per cent when compared to the 79,224 members in March 2016. This is despite losing some branches due to restructuring.
The union had 182 Ordinary Branches as of 31 March 2018. SISEU managed to bring in nine new branches and one new association into the union fold within the last two years.
Addressing 143 delegates at the ODC, SISEU Council of Advisors Chairman Gan Kim Yong urged union leaders to support SISEU in achieving the 100,000-membership target.
“I’m happy to see that our union membership has been growing. Most of the unions in the world have a challenge of shrinking membership, but NTUC and SISEU have seen their membership grow. Currently, SISEU has some 85,000, and the number is growing as we speak.
“This is a credit to SISEU’s leadership and our branch members who have been working hard to recruit and retain members,” he said.
The conference also saw branch delegates give the mandate to amend the union’s constitution.
There were four proposed administrative amendments to the constitution in areas such as the facilitation of Council of Advisors meetings and union governance.
