The Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union (SCTU) celebrated Teachers’ Day with 250 guests over a luncheon on 26 August 2017.

Certificates and prizes ranging from $80 to $180 were presented to 94 awardees across primary, secondary and junior college levels to recognise union members’ children for their overall academic and Chinese language excellence.

In a speech, SCTU President Yap Kim Hung said the union has noted this year’s National Day Rally focus on preschools and will be looking at how they can help Chinese language teachers in kindergartens advance their career.

He also encouraged more to sign up for SCTU’s biennial international forum in December 2017. About 40 teachers will be going to University of Macau to present and exchange insights with other Chinese language experts.

Guest-of-Honour and Senior Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Education Low Yen Ling said the Chinese teachers undertake an important mission to transfer the essence of the language, such as personal values and culture, to the next generation. Meanwhile, she encouraged parents to get creative with teaching methods to develop their children’s interests.
