Singaporean youths have been under scrutiny recently, regarding their understanding of the elders and their sense of filial piety. Underscoring this enquiry, and to get Singapore youths to interact more with their elders in society, the Rotary Club of Bugis Junction and Young NTUC are organising the inaugural Silver 100 Walk 2012 – pairing one youth and one elderly with the combined age of 100 to take a stroll along the scenic Marina Boulevard, to raise funds for the NTUC Rotary Silver Circle -
Marsiling Eldercare day care centre.
Scheduled for 8 April 2012, the Silver 100 Walk features a walk that will take place from Bayfront Link at Marina Bay Sands to the NTUC Centre at One Marina Boulevard, allowing participants young and old to enjoy the beautiful Marina Bay scenery. The concept encourages a ‘walking pair’ of one youth and one elderly participant with a combined age of 100 to take the stroll along the Marina Bay Promenade, therefore the name Silver 100 Walk. During the Silver 100 Walk, the youth will be able to help and interact with their elder, while the elder will be able to regale the youth with their life experiences.
NTUC Eldercare Co-operative Ltd., operates eight Silver Circle Day Care Centres throughout the island. Of these, named NTUC Rotary Silver Circle – Marsiling. Established since 1999, it is the NTUC Eldercare’s first day care centre.
The objective of the day care centre is to provide a community-based facility, in a safe and person-centred environment, complete with purposeful activities and programmes to help the elderly lead happy, meaningful and dignified lives. These include maintenance and rehabilitation exercises, leisure games and activities, outings, festive celebrations, etc. As the need for more services increases as the elderly ages, NTUC Eldercare have added more professionals like nurses and physiotherapists, which became integral to delivering a more holistic care.
Main organisers, Rotary Club of Bugis Junction and Young NTUC, organise the Silver 100 Walk to raise awareness and funds to support the NTUC-Rotary Silver Circle-Marsiling. Purpose is to purchase a transportation vehicle for the elders to ferry them to/fro their homes to the Marsiling centre and to support its renovation and operational costs.
The Rotary Club and Young NTUC sincerely invite the media to become a part of in this event for a cause either as a participant or as an encourager to this cause.
The Silver 100 Walk event will kick off with a speech by guest-of-honour, Chairman of NTUC Eldercare, Lim Boon Heng.
