Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) achieved a milestone partnership with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) today, as it offers the bulk of its 12,000-strong workforce membership into the Labour Movement, extending its staff benefits to even beyond the resort’s myriad of leisure options that they currently already enjoy.
This follows months of discussions between both parties, with the common objective to ensure constructive and positive labour management relations, and that workers are fairly treated, engaged, and motivated to contribute at their jobs and to the company.
These discussions bring about today’s win-win outcome for both the Labour Movement as well as Singapore’s first integrated resort. Both sides will work together to offer about 7,000 of RWS’ eligible rank-and-file employees a membership in the Labour Movement. The employees will be General Branch members under Attractions, Resorts and Entertainment Union (AREU), which is affiliated to NTUC.
Membership fees will be paid for by RWS as a benefit for workers. This means they will be able to enjoy a whole range of social and lifestyle benefits, training, education and other subsidies offered through NTUC and AREU.
Like other NTUC members, RWS employees are now also eligible to benefits such as NTUC FairPrice cash rebates, free group insurance coverage, grants for training and even discounts on movie tickets, amongst others, in addition to the staff perks they already enjoy resort-wide – including exclusive team member previews to performances and exhibitions as well as rides and attractions at Universal Studios Singapore. Therefore, both parties agreed that collective bargaining, and negotiating for better terms, are not the key objectives of this exercise.
At the same time, both sides will set up a Bipartite Joint Working Committee to discuss matters pertinent to workers.
Ms Seah-Khoo Ee Boon, Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Training, Resorts World Sentosa said: “As part of its bid to continually engage and motivate its team members, through active dialogue, improving welfare and offering one of the most attractive terms in Singapore, we will offer and sponsor this membership for 7,000 team members.”
"As one of the largest employers in Singapore, RWS believes that working closely with the Labour Movement will better engage our team members, especially in support of the national productivity drive, as well as allow them to enjoy the benefits of being part of the wider labour movement", Ms Seah-Khoo added.
Said NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Ong Ye Kung: “RWS offers attractive and competitive employment terms, and ample training and career opportunities. As a result, it has been drawing many job applicants. As an iconic development and one of Singapore’s largest employers, I am happy that both parties have established this platform for management and workers to forge an even closer partnership.”
