Singapore Union of Broadcasting Employees (SUBE) President Erat Vinodan is stepping down after serving the union for more than two decades, since 1994.

This was formally announced at SUBE’s 2nd Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference on 27 July 2018.

There were 24 delegates representing six branches present to cast their vote on the proposed amendments to constitution rules as well as the election of president and first vice-president for the term of office from 2018 to 2022.

Cheng Teck Thye and S. Kanasan were the top-voted among the nominations submitted for the position of president and first vice-president respectively. They will be assuming their new positions with immediate effect.

Other key leadership movements include Sumen P Veerasamy who took over the reins from Sim Siew Lect as the general secretary, and Steve Ong Eng Kwang from Lucy Ong as the general treasurer.

The new term also saw a number of young leaders stepping forward to serve in the executive committee and at branch level. The interests of these young leaders were ignited through the various sports events that SUBE organised over the past years.

Over the past four years, the Collective Agreement for Mediacorp Pte Ltd and Mediacorp TV Singapore has been renewed with more favourable terms in the areas of long service award, shift allowance, specialist claim limit, prolonged illness leave, retrenchment benefit, as well as retirement and re-employment growth.

Erat said: “Membership figures have increased modestly the end of our term. I want to reiterate here that we exist for our members and we must continually target membership rate of at least 75 per cent in order for our voices and requests to be taken seriously by management.”

Irene Low, who will be continuing her role in the union as executive secretary, added that the union’s other targets ahead include renewal of the Collective Agreement, reviewing medical and re-employment benefits, as well as leadership training for new union leaders.
