The Protection from Harassment Act came into effect on 15 November 2014.
The Act defines harassment as well as the civil remedies and criminal sanctions to protect against harassment and several types of anti-social behaviour.
In conjunction with the Act, enhanced protection is extended to public service workers, especially for those who deliver essential public services such as public healthcare and public transport.
Under the Protection from Harassment (Public Service Worker) Order 2014, it is an offence to use or make any indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words, or behaviour towards a public servant or public service worker.
The penalty for such an offence is a fine of up to S$5,000 or imprisonment up to 12 months, or both.
Defining Public Service Worker
A public service worker is defined in the Protection from Harassment (Public Service Worker) Order 2014.
