Volunteers from KK Hospital and the National Taxi Association (NTA) came together on 29 July 2017 to spread cheer to chronically ill children and their families at Toa Payoh Community Centre for the annual Project Give initiative.
NTA sponsored the transport to ferry the children and their families to and from the party.
This year, 35 cabbies stepped forward to take part in the initiative. One of the volunteers was NTA General Secretary Foo Chi Yong, who has taken part in the initiative since it started in 2014.
“It is a way for me to give back to the community. There are people who are less fortunate. We must do our part to render as much assistance as we can. The volunteers are mostly the older cab drivers, so I hope younger cab drivers will come on board and help sustain this initiative,” said Mr Foo.
One beneficiary was Kang Ching Hsiong, an IT officer whose 5-year-old daughter suffers from Antley Bixler Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that causes malformations of the head and facial area.
“To me, initiatives like these are a good way to break our routine of going to the hospital. Sometimes we get so occupied with the medical appointments that we forget to bring our child out to just have fun. At the same time, we get to meet other families who understand what we go through. This way, we can share experiences and learn from each other on how to better care for our children,” he said.
