One of the topics discussed at the 106th International Labour Conference (ILO) in Geneva on 13 June 2017 was on preparing workers for the era of green jobs.
According to the ILO, examples of green jobs are those in new and emerging sectors like renewable energy and energy efficiency.
During the plenary session, NTUC President Mary Liew touched on the steps taken by NTUC to introduce the concept of green jobs to workers.
Ms Liew has been re-elected as deputy member of the ILO governing body for the period 2017 to 2020.
She was part of the Singapore tripartite delegation led by Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say.
Preparing Workers
To increase awareness of the green jobs sector amongst young workers, Young NTUC organised an inaugural water sector career fair with PUB during the International Water Week in 2016.
Moving ahead, it will continue working with strategic partners to organise green sector career fairs.
NTUC is also collaborating with the Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS) to launch two sectoral initiatives later this year.
The first is the 12-week Sustainability Internship Programme with local enterprises aimed at giving young workers the necessary experience to secure jobs in the green sector.
The second is the Sustainability Professional Programme targeted at mid-career professionals and those seeking a career change.
Training will be provided by NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute), with local corporations providing job opportunities and exposure.
