That better way to end 2011 than to bring together like-minded individuals and appreciate those who have contributed in the past year? This was exactly what Young NTUC did, as they appreciated their youth activists at their first ever year-end gathering organised for its committee members on 14 December 2011.

The night saw 108 individuals, comprising Young NTUC appointment holders, committee members, and Team Young NTUC team managers walking away with acrylic plaques specially prepared for them to recognise them for their contributions in the past year.

Said Young NTUC Executive Secretary Steve Tan: “In 2011, Young NTUC leaders organised 60 engagements, which means at least one activity per week. In total, we reached more than 8,500 members at their workplaces,a growth of about 25 per cent over 2010. It is no mean feat for our young union leaders if you consider that they are all volunteers and could only organise these programmes through sacrificing their personal time off work. For this, we salute them and this year-end gathering is a modest attempt to say a simple thank you.

“After sending off 2011, the challenge for Young NTUC in 2012 is to continue to grow these engagements at unionised companies and at the same time reach out with similar intensity to all young workers in Singapore. Our aspiration really is to reach out and organize youths to help bring forth constructive progress in society and through this, the betterment of our lives.”

To be appreciated in such a way was indeed heartening for many of the members, and Young NTUC Committee Member Herlina Abdul Rahman was one who looked forward to serving Young NTUC for as long as she can.

She shared: “This may be a small token of appreciation, but such an act is important to us young people as well. This recognition gives us great encouragement and also reaffirms that we are capable of doing things beyond our own expectation. For instance, I played a part in organising the largest night kite flying event, and set a role model for my niece who saw how with passion great things can be accomplished.”

Added Young NTUC Committee Member Tan Kok Heng: “It’s a privilege to receive this recognition definitely. I feel a sense of belonging towards Young NTUC, and whatever I can give to Young NTUC gives me a sense of fulfilment. I also feel that I have a higher responsibility to themembers whom I am serving.”

The night also created a platform for members who attended the Workplan Seminar earlier on to relive wonderful memories they have built.
