Some 75 per cent of the 300 over retrenched Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) staff who attended the NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) Job Fair held on 20 July 2020 have been shortlisted by prospective employers.
NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Desmond Choo, who is also an Advisor to the Attractions, Resorts and Entertainment Union (AREU), announced the figures in a Facebook post on 27 July 2020.
The job fair follows the RWS’ decision to implement a one-off workforce rationalisation on 15 July 2020. It is still unknown the exact number of staff affected by the exercise.
“We will continue to look out for and protect the interests of workers and mobilize NTUC and community resources to help them tide over such difficult times,” said Mr Choo.
NTUC and AREU
In the same post, Mr Choo noted that AREU, together with the NTUC Job Security Council and NTUC’s e2i will continue to assist affected workers in finding new jobs.
Mr Choo stated that NTUC’s key priority at this point is to ensure that workers’ concerns are addressed, and to ensure that affected workers are accorded treatment that is in line with the NTUC Fair Retrenchment Framework, and the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment.
AREU assures its members and workers that the union will continue to engage, assist and stand up for them to tide them through this period.
Union members and workers should first approach the union if they face employment related issues so that union leaders can provide them the necessary assistance, stressed Mr Choo.
