The U Sports Awards Night 2016 was a celebratory affair as sportsmen and sportswomen of the annual inter-union U Games were recognised for their achievements this season.

This year, The Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers’ Union (SMMWU) emerged as the champion union for the fifth successive year, fending off strong challengers in the United Workers of Electronics & Electrical Industries and the Amalgamated Union of Public Employees, who finished as first and second runners-up respectively. Giving Back

This year saw more than 8,000 participants from 46 unions across 13 sports battling it out for the sporting spotlight. To date there are 40 union sports clubs and 15 unions who have tapped on NTUC funding for sports-related events.

“This shows us that sports engages our union members. It is one of our key mission to build sports capabilities, foster team spirit and camaraderie across all ages amongst our members,” said Guest-of-Honour NTUC President Mary Liew.

One of the newer initiatives introduced this year was the U CHAMP programme, where U Sports leaders undergo a leadership and capability development programme to groom participants to initiate sporting events to give back to society. This includes leading workout classes for other unions and free coaching for local schools.

U Games Sportswoman of the Year Jean Chia said that the programme has helped participants to be equipped with the leadership capabilities to contribute back to the community.

“To see sportsmanship and to forge new friendships among the affiliate unions give me a sense of an all-inclusiveness that represents what U Sports is about,” she added.
