“With technological advancement, people now have stores in the palm of their hands. Many people I know do their shopping online. I don’t think this trend will go away anytime soon but instead, I know as technology improves further, this trend will be the norm soon enough,” said 29-year-old Soh Ming Kai.
As a marketing executive at Fitlion, Ming Kai takes pride in providing an exceptional online shopping experience for customers. His employer is one of the top online supplement and fitness accessories retailer in Singapore.
“E-commerce will certainly take over brick-and-mortar shops. Even now, we see a lot of physical shops closing down or branching out their businesses by going online,” said Ming Kai.
SkillsFuture Study Award
Ming Kai was one of Fitlion’s employees that took on the SkillsFuture Study Award for the Retail Sector in April last year. The award, provided by SPRING Singapore, supports early to mid-career Singaporeans in courses relevant to their jobs.
He has since completed his 12-month Diploma in Business Administration (Supply Chain Management) with PSB Academy. Ming Kai is now contributing to the growth of Fitlion domestically and internationally by pairing his newfound knowledge to the company’s e-commerce platform.
“I did a certificate in sports when I was in ITE, so I didn’t have much experience in business and management. After completing the course, I now have an in-depth knowledge on how to help the business grow,” said Ming Kai, who has been with Fitlion for the past five years.
Staying Relevant
Ming Kai’s advice to those who want to enter the retail business is to keep themselves updated with trends of today.
“Most importantly, to prepare themselves for the future of retail, their knowledge and skills must be relevant with the times. Learn how to use new technology. Although the basics of retail are the same, how it is done will keep changing. There is no fixed way of how business is done nowadays given how fast technology is changing,” he said.
