When her husband Mr Richard Hoon, 48, told her they were going on a special date, Madam Boyi Tan, 44, had no idea where they were going because he wanted to keep it a surprise for her. Married for 13 years with a child, the couple shared that since they had a child, couple time has been rather limited as they spend more time as a family instead.

Madam Tan said: “Even though we see each other everyday, I think it’s important to get out of our routine and do something different. And I really appreciate him for bringing me hereand putting in the effort to do this.”

Mr Hoon and Madam Tan were among 700 couples who were at Romancing U, a signature event by NTUC Family Development Unit (U Family), on 6 April 2013 at Marina Barrage. Mr Hoon, who is an NTUC member, decided to make it a surprise for his wife because they have not been on a date for quite some time.0020“We hardly have time together, so this is a good opportunity,” he said.

Indeed, U Family understands the predicament of married couples who may have overlooked their relationship as a couple because they may be bogged down by their daily responsibilities. U Family Principal Specialist (Programme & Outreach) Koh Yan Ping said: “Romancing U is targeted specifically at married couples so we really want to tell couples that they have to prioritise the marriage over and above the daily demands of family life. We think it is important to do it once a year to remind them of the importance.”

The fourth edition of Romancing U had an added comic relief as Pornsak Sukhumvit (played by Chua Enlai) from MediaCorp Channel 5’s comedy television series ‘The Noose’ was invited to share tips on how couples can bring back the spark in the bedroom. Couples also shared laughs during the movie screening of the romantic comedy, ‘The Five Year Engagement’.
