We all know the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute (OTCi) is about equipping union leaders, and stakeholders pick up values, knowledge and competence in the arena of industrial relations and employment development. But did you know that it also plays a key role in supporting the Labour Movement’s efforts in shaping labour-related initiatives and programmes with evidence garnered through extensive research work?
With a focus on trending labour issues, the Labour Research Conference 2018 centred around the theme ‘Inclusion. Transition. Transformation.’
Some 280 union leaders, management partners, and representatives from ministries and government agencies attended the conference on 8 November 2018 at the NTUC Centre. NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan attended the event.
OTCi partnered with academics from institutes of higher learning such as the Singapore Management University, the Singapore University of Social Sciences, the Singapore University of Technology and Design to research topics such as the upskilling of mature workers, workers in transition and the polarising of job opportunities.
Conference participants got a first-hand look at research findings and recommendations on these topics.
As part of the presentation, union leaders were also invited to share their knowledge, experience and sensing from the ground on the related topics.
OTCi hoped that the novel approach could more effectively illustrate the benefits of the research and the actions to take from the insights.
Following that first look at the research findings, OTCi will be working with the academics to finalise the research and prepare them for publication by the end of the first quarter of 2019.
