Following the announcement by SMRT of an enhanced Service Leader remuneration package on 15 October 2012, the National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) issued a response:

“The NTWU and SMRT management agreed to the implementation of a salary increase, coupled with a six-day work week, effective from 1 July 2012.

“This agreement included an option for Service Leaders to revert to five-day work week, which they can exercise within six months of implementation, so as to trigger a review of the package.

“The Union has been in active engagement with management since the implementation of the package, and the Union is pleased with the negotiated outcome announced by SMRT today.

“This is a very significant and substantial increase in salaries for Service Leaders in many years. The NTWU feels that the package is generally fair, and commensurate with the move from a five to six-day week, with working hours remaining constant at 44 hours per week.

“We hope this move will provide the impetus to improve the welfare of workers, raise service standards and benefit all stakeholders in the industry.”

Salaries of all SLs were increased from between $75 to $250 in July 2012. The latest Enhanced Service Leader Salary Package will see further upward adjustments made to the basic salaries of all Singaporean, SPR, and non-Singaporean SLs.

With the new package, the total salary adjustments for this group of SLs, including those that were implemented in July 2012, will see total increases of as high as $400 for Singaporean SLs and $175 for SPR and non-Singaporean SLs.
